Research Profile

Falk works on understanding, determinants, and consequences of economic preferences such as time, risk, and social preferences. He uses globally representative data from 76 countries and compassing about 80,000 observations. His research documents cultural and historical roots of preferences and also shows how preferences affect economic and social outcomes worldwide. In related research, Falk studies the developmental pattern of human personality and preferences at the individual level. Here, he uses data from the “Bonn Intervention Panel”. This panel includes observations from children starting at age 8 and their families and combines detailed household information with a randomly assigned mentoring program. Finally, Falk continues his work on understanding malleability of moral behavior, including determinants such as self-image, status differences, personality, and institutions.
