Obituary to Dmitry Ioffe

On October 1st, 2020, at the age of 57, Prof. Dr. Dmitry Ioffe passed away in Haifa. Ioffe was a professor at the Technion and had close ties to the University of Bonn. Since 2009 he had been a long-term guest at the Institute for Applied Mathematics, the Hausdorff Center and the SFB 1060 almost every year. In 2012-13 he spent a year in Bonn as a Humboldt Research Award winner. Ioffe was an outstanding mathematician who enormously enriched research in Bonn mathematics. His research field was probability theory and mathematical statistical mechanics. One focus of the cooperation with Bonn was a long-term project on questions of metastability and large deviations in the stochastic dynamics of interacting many-body systems, which play an important role in the SFB1060. He was particularly committed to the next generation of scientists and generously supported our PhD students, and he helped to supervise several dissertations.

The colleagues in Bonn and worldwide are mourning for a great man, a good friend and a brilliant mathematician. Our sincere condolences to his family.
